Shavlik NetChk Limited can be used free of charge. This security program takes up where Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) 2.x leaves off by analyzing the patch status of those Microsoft products not supported by current Microsoft patch technologies. Use it as a supplement to MBSA 2.x to provide a complete security analysis of all the Microsoft products contained on your network machines.
Shavlik NetChk Limited will scan one or more machines in your network and detect any missing patches. In addition to the normal scan results produced by the program, an MBSA-compatible output file will also be created for each machine that was scanned. The MBSA files can be used as input to MBSA when reviewing the security status of the individual machines.
Shavlik NetChk Limited also gives you limited access to the spyware management capabilities provided by the program. You can scan the machines in your network and determine if they contain spyware. See the section titled Spyware Management Tasks for more details.
As its name suggests, Shavlik NetChk Limited is not a full-featured version of the program. It scans only a limited product set for missing patches. It does not enable you to deploy missing patches to the machines in your network nor does it enable you to remove spyware that is detected on your machines. For these and other capabilities you must purchase a product license from Shavlik Technologies. A free trial license is available if you want to sample the full-featured version of Shavlik NetChk Protect before purchasing a license. See http://www.shavlik.com/pDownloadForm4.aspx?productid=74 for details.
Using Shavlik NetChk Limited is fairly straightforward. You simply need to determine which machines you want to scan and how you want to perform the scans (agentless or agent-based). See the following topics for detailed instructions on how to perform the following tasks:
Scan your own machine. For detailed instructions, see Scanning Your Own Machine.
Scan multiple machines from the console (this is called an agentless scan). For detailed instructions, see Performing an Agentless Scan of Multiple Machines.
Scan multiple machines using agents that are installed on each target machine. For detailed instructions, see Performing an Agent-based Scan of Multiple Machines.
Shavlik NetChk Limited patch scans can also be performed from the command-line using hfnetchk4pro.exe. To view all available commands, type hfnetchk4pro.exe/?.
